A little Competition…

Posted June 28th, 2012 in Uncategorized by admin

The time has cometh to decide who will get their hands on the first boards. We will use a competition! To enter, submit a comment to this post on what cool applications you will use the board for. Your comment must be no more than 30 words! Videos would also be fantastic! The best, most creative comment/video will win a free board plus free shipping to any country in the world! The other 3 runner ups will receive a chance to purchase one of the remaining 3 boards.  Good Luck! (:

Please Note: The first 4 boards we’re making available should be considered as beta! Due to slight modifications to the board such as the inclusion of ICS 4, booting off the Micro SD card is no longer functional resulting in  boot hangs. Please do not despair, both Arch Linux ARM and us are confident that this problem can be rectified in the near future!

Update: Competition closes end of next Sunday. Winners will be announced on Monday!

I would build a Car PC with ignition & RFID access-log. It is in the car as well as bluetooth speakers work.

  4. John Brück says:

I am interested in such a board for building a good security cam that actually will do what I want. All other security webcams are around 1000€ and way too expensive.

Also I am trying to build a box to connect to the TV for Surfing the Web, Playing small games with a wireless remote and watching Videos.

    Love,
    John

I would run XBMC to stream content from my SubSonic server so my grandpa can watch tv shows and movies without having to sit as his computer.

  10. Sebastian says:

I have to do a backup of my root server regularly and I am doing from my notebook. I would use the board to tie it to my USB harddrive and then I would have a backup system that can be placed everywhere wifi is available. I need the computing power of the board because I am using rsync via ssh.

So it would be very cool to have a board and I can start and forget my backup solution.

Also I plan to do install some linux on it and try out xmbc and all the other stuff but my primary idea is to have a backup system.

  11. Sebastian says:

…oh an it will be connected to my thermal printer so I can get receipts whenever a backup is complete :)

  12. emmo says:

i’d like to develope compact ultra rugged communication gear (sat&encrypted) for areas where no uncensored media access is possible (send and forget / receive and forget)

Will be realized over the entire touch panel.

  14. Brandon Bromiley says:

Initial plan is to create a touch screen CarPC with OBD-II/EOBD connectivity for vehicle diagnostics and in car infotainment. Hopefully with bluetooth (hands free calling) and a functioning T-Mobile modem for constant in car internet (pandora radio and GPS navigation) assuming I can also get GPS.

I would also use one for android development and testing of OBD-II/EOBD enhanced diagnostics software. Specifically Palmer Performance Engineering’s DashCommand

  15. frapSo says:

As elder pc-supporter for retired peoples i will show the others, how they can demonstrate her grandchilds what’s the future of computing…

  16. Jes says:

I would like to see whether it would be feasible to use the board for simulations such as FEM and computational fluid simulations, utilizing the GPU. I would compare performance to price, including electricity costs. Maybe it would be competitive in high performance computing.

  17. SRLKilling says:

Well, i’ve two project using this board :
    - The first one would be to build an homemade tablet to learn more about electronic and hardware stuff.
    - The second is to use the board as a domotic server, maybe used with opencv and some cameras, or sensors, to do simple tasks such as switching ligths on/off, turning computer on/off, opening/closing the shutters, turning on/off an alarm, and stuff like that…
I know it’s not that original, but seems intersting (and useful) to me :)

  18. Roberto says:

IMHO I think the best project would be a kid computer, 2d educational games, videos and a “serious” mediacenter, even a custom OS for this tasks would be pretty nice and cheap!!

    No more pseudo-tablets for kids!

  19. Champ says:

    hello,
I have to build with this part remains a jaybook-9905 upgrade or a completely separate notbook if the lcd is not compatible. Besides these you can solder additionally a further 2 usb connections but only one has full component assembly (all be added together, there are 3). the components are not expensive, there are only a voltage regulator and resistor and capacitors. If I not find any matching lcd or other problems then I would have a small pc build it. much still to extend custody internal memory (swap the nand) or other experimental

  24. Jake says:

I want to use something like this as a new control system for my automatic cocktail machine. Currently it runs totally off an arduino board, but thinking I could get a much better and more powerful interface using ICS and the Android ADK in combo with the arduino to to drive the I/O. Perhaps build it into a nice kiosk with screen. With it being wireless could even make a web based interface or link it to a tablet etc. So many possibilities!

I’ll interface it with an usb footswitch later.

  44. Roni says:

Get the supplier to sell it directly on eBay (He already does that with it’s tablets). That way you’ll get hundreds of distributors, low shipping costs with insurance, and avoid the raspberry Pi fiasco of people selling them on eBay for profit.

  45. Frank Schuster says:

I would like to build home access control. I already got a device that can turn a key in a lock, a webcam and a fingerprint scanner. Thus far I have been able to get finger print unlocking to work, but only with my pc and long cables. so the raspberry would be just the thing I need, to make my own high level security access system with XML based user authentication for my home via face recognition (work in progress) or fingerprint (done, but in experimental stage).

    That’s my idea,
    Frank

  46. Frank Schuster says:

    30 Words:

Want to build automatic authentication for my home with fingerprint (somewhat working) and face recognition. The Gooseberry is needed as a server for unlocking and XML authentication.

    Frank

  47. DUDO says:

    Guys
I don’t have a time to play with it but I would port Ubuntu-TV on to it.
I would buy that straight away.

    DUDO

  48. ChrisB says:

Would like to use it with my DyIO to complete my open source fortune telling machine (think the movie “Big”, but creepier) for Idaho Makerfair 2013.

  49. Sapan says:

I would like to try and run it from a solar panel and use it to continually collect stats from my main solar panels on my roof and then use Graphite to chart my energy production. I would like to use the built in holt-winters features in Graphite to forecast my earnings from my solar endeavours.

  50. Pfahli says:

I will try to build a server, that can be extended with other gooseberry boards to build up an arm powered gooseberryserver.

  51. Fosco says:

I would use the Gooseberry to automate my solar powered aquaponic system. Not only would it be fantastic for controlling pumps and solenoids, It could also track and post data (flow rates, temps,DOxy, power consumption/generation and even video feeds).

  52. Ben says:

The Platinum Girls: Affordable interactivity Grandma can install. Netvideo for Rockford reruns, webcam for Hangouts, browser for grandkid pics. IR input, single home screen. Connectivity fits on the curio shelf.

  53. Ryan Heatherly says:

When will this competition be ending?

  54. Glenn De Backer says:

I want to create a small low power kiosk device which can have unlimited uses (entertainment, education, etc) I have already a working prototype (and use it also on my HTPC) https://vimeo.com/43782492 . It’s QT based so it should be easy to port to ARM, even making it a standalone. My first idea was to buy a RPI but after research I gave my preorder slot to somebody else. Since then because of lack of a powerfull inexpensive board, the project halted a bit.

  55. ollo says:

I will make smart house system. I would use 6lowpan technology to control all devices.

  56. Julian says:

“I’ll use it as a client for my media server to stream FullHD and play music. There are some nice features like “light controlling” i’ll try to implent.”

These are my 30 words. I hope my english is not too bad (I’m from Germany^^), but I have a video for you with the effect lights (0:25):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeXSULhlxKo

  57. John says:

We will build a remote antenna controller unit that can interface with our deep space VT-063 antenna. It is currently monitoring the ACE satellite at a distance of 1.5 million km from the Earth which is used to predict the suns weather and protect satellites etc.

  58. Michael Siebertz says:

I would like to program a Robot with this Board to play Soccer and film it in HD. With WLAN it can stream it to the PC.

  59. Martin says:

    I would use it for:
    -rooting android phones
    -projector/TV mini pc
    -in-car TV
    -programming in school
    -security camera
    -server
    -ceacking wifi’s in my neigborhood
-and the best I’m going to build something in style of microsoft table

I’m verry happy for this board that it came on the market, and the most important thing is that we can teach children programming and using board for other things not just for games and internet, because this jobs like programmer are paid verry good and only thing you need is computer! I’m 15 and I can tell you that all my classmates are interested in gooseberry! I’m so interesting in this board that I have bought all components for my gooseberry <3

    Best Regards

  60. Martin says:

  62. Matt2005 says:

I’d use a gooseberry to create OBD-II interface that links a GPS to create a telematics device, and double-up as an in-car entertainment system that interfaces with VAG dashboard display

  63. radzio says:

I want to create mediacenter on Android and/or other Linux.

Something similar to Nexus Q ;-)

With webserver, and some mono stuff for C# (Windows Clients :D ).

    ——————–

Prepare special version of my app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scrobblefm for more desktop use with controlling via other phone/dekstop and with sort of web interface.

    ——————–

Connect some sensors and create meteo station with webinterface and Android client app ;-) .

    ——————–

If will get one soon it is highly possible that I would use it in my master thesis ;-) .

    ——————-

And many, many more ;-) . On Raspberry Pi I have created a lot so on Gooseberry it would be much, much more ;-)

  64. Michael says:

Art Installations – We encourage our students to develop artistic installations involving any tech they want. They focus on any aspect they want, image, interaction environment. Gooseberry is perfect for this.

  65. Bine says:

I’d like to show my son the ‘evolution’ since my C64 to this ‘pocket-pc’ which will be our new media center :D
this realization still sends shiver down my spine

  66. Jake Hambey says:

I want to code an operating system specifically to emulate the old video game systems, this board would be great for a test platform.

  67. Ryan Heatherly says:

Here is my submission. Hope you like it since i was working on it since days. :) http://youtu.be/_rccPKk0-jg

Would really love a Gooseberry Board. :) I wouldn’t need to use a computer for my internet browsing and such daily activities :)

    • emmo says:

That’s a nice vid you made there!!!

    • admin says:

Wow! Don’t want to announce winners at this point but you certainly have a good chance! :)

      • Ryan Heatherly says:

Thanks mate, that’s surely some appreciation, and made all those work hours worth it.

      • Ryan Heatherly says:

@admin I would have worked harder at this, but there wasn’t a closing date mentioned, so I wanted to submit it before the competition is closed, and all my work goes to waste :( . Better safe than sorry.

By the way, with the small logos on the site, and no other images, i had to recreate your logos in a hurry, I hope you’ll don’t mind that :(

    • Pfahli says:

You know, that the gooseberry site isn’t gooseberry.com? :-)

      • Ryan Heatherly says:

Oh shit, should i redo it? :| :( I can do it :)

        • Pfahli says:

          I don’t think, thats a big problem, ;-)
          How did you render it?

        • Pfahli says:

And btw, I’m not part of the staff :-D
My name is just green because of my website, you don’t have to redo it because of me;-)

I will add you as friend on YouTube tomorrow!

          • Ryan Heatherly says:

Hey, i knew it, but it was a mistake i had to fix. I guess watching reruns for graphical mistakes kinda made me miss out on the website mistake. I usually just type gooseberry and ENTER to get to the site. :D

I don’t use Youtube much, or upload any videos, I just did it for the requirement of this competition. But i will add you :)

I rendered it on After Effects, but built it with Flash. Since my system is really slow.
I had run on of space, and had to use the Flash drive to render it on, but no one told me it would burn my flashdrive out. I guess it was too heavy for my 16GB sandisk Ultra back up.
Just a 1 Minute file was rendering to a 1.60GB movie. :| had to compress it to upload it.

Thanks a lot for your help mate ! :)

        • Pfahli says:

If you want, I could render it for you in Full HD

My pc has an i7, 10Gb RAM, an ATI Radeon 6550 and After Effects CS 5

      • Ryan Heatherly says:

I hope this is better, I fixed it. http://youtu.be/zp6gxy2nRXk

Make my TV smart, run a NAS/media server, make a download pc and show off to all who bought raspberry pi’s.

  70. Ronny says:

    Hi,

I would like to make the Board mobile with a small Battery. Then connect a Kinect (or better an Asus Xtion) to the Gooseberry and run ROS or PCL on it. It would be great to build the first prototype of a 3D mobile camera with the gooseberry. The device would be perfect for that and could change the way of taking fotos today.

  71. I will be building a synthesizer featuring a full sized keyboard, inbuilt 15″ touch based DAW, multiple synthesisation methods and the ability to record multiple tracks on the device itself!

  72. Louis says:

I will build a low budget plug & play domotica system for disabled and old people, which could be controlled by any universal controller, PC, iPad or Android device.

  73. Chris says:

Create a monitoring board for our web app ( Done It Yeti? http://www.doneityeti.com ) so we can pull important data through and display it to the studio 24/7.

Also possible integration with some kind of external addons to make big red lights flash / sirens wail if something breaks :P

  74. Wolfgang says:

I would use the board as a small but reasonably powerful platform for a simulated simh/vms/vax environment. Anything cooler than a full fledged vax in my pocket? I would add some kind of 3g umts stick too and would have this machine reacheable from the internet 24/7 anywhere I go.

  75. Beef Supreme says:

first i would overclock it like hell. i would need a datasheet of the ic that controlls the vrm, -> that delivers the cpu with voltage. so i would do a kind of voltmod. maybe i would do for a zombiemod if necessary, depending on the powerconsumption. at least i would build build a kinda netbook without display xD

    gg0g0g0000

  76. DeCompras says:

We would use it along with a Pixel Qi monitor for an ultra-low power solar powered computer for our Appropriate Technology Research Station in the mountains of Central Portugal. Everything from environmental controls on the green house, solar PV panel tracker, data logging on hydro power production from the river, as well as instructional works for the station and classroom presentation.

All fitted in an awesome sustainable-handcrafted steampunk olivewood case!

  77. florent says:

i’ll use it as the main brain for the artificial intelligence of the robot my group of student are designing: it will allow us to have the memory and RAM needed to map its environement and to plan its own trajectory.

  78. Seppi says:

I am member of a scout group and in the last 2 month they broke in into our club house twice. Now I need a low-power system for video surveillance.

  79. That’s a good post.

  80. Mike says:

I’m thinking a voice controlled stereo system throughout my house. One of these, or perhaps a wifi microphone, in each room. “Gooseberry, turn on Pandora Station The Clash”. Use a keyword and filtering to prevent the music from triggering effects. I can’t wait!!

  81. Vivien says:

    Hi,
I’m an engineer and I’m already in a beta stage of making a TV backlight system (ambilight like), but raspberry pi isn’t really powerful to get something fluent.
    That’s why I need a Gooseberry.
    Please help me :)

  82. Florian says:

    Hi,
the goosberry board is perfectly suited to build up a simple marine system which controlls io components like ais / navtex / gps. Further more

  83. Florian says:

    Hi,
the goosberry board is perfectly suited to build up a simple marine system which controlls io components like ais / navtex / gps. Further more a monitor should display the processed data (GPS Card’n stuff).

  84. holger klein says:

I will put it into the basic school my girlfriend is teaching at and give the kids some introduction on computing, hacking, coding and maybe we are able to realise a cool classroom gadget which detects when the blackboard have to be cleaned and via text2speech who have to do it :D

  85. MysticWhiteDragon says:

I would make one into a Carputer and another into HTPC.

  86. Umar says:

I am working towards researching concurrent distributed systems and am looking for low cost computers. I would need these computers at different locations with remote access. Another requirement is low energy consumption. ARM boards look like a good option, but I would need them in exponents of 2. A single board can start off the experimentation.

  87. Jack Poznak says:

I’m willing to put it in a ps2 slim (as a case) and use it as little pc-mediacenter!

  88. steve says:

I plan to strap it to the back of a hedgehog [wearing a mac as it rains a lot here] and track it as it forages in preparation for hibernation. Once hibernating, should it have chosen a bonfire site, temperature increase will send alert

  89. Emil Smith says:

I need this board to program skynet and become ruler of the machine army under the guise of being a terminator, to harvest the world’s chocolate cake supplies for myself.

  90. Chris says:

I need to make something to scare the crap out of my cats. Did I say scare? I mean entertain….

  91. Ciaran says:

Low cost, low power multimedia hub for a schoolroom

  92. Manish Ahuja says:

I need it to control a electrophoresis system, a laboratory product, which requires a USB camera and Bluetooth to remotely run pump, motor, solenoid and high power LEDs. I already have the board which contains all the driver circuits. I do not have a controlling PCB where Gooseberry would fit without any problem!

  93. Johannes Lungenschmied says:

I would use it to create my on Nexus Q and show Google that it can be done cheaper.

  94. Till says:

I’d like to Build a mini pc with a custom 3D printed Case featuring a 2.5″ drive and enough space for a powered USB hub. Working together with an electronics student I’m going to aim for an autarc Computer with its own Power Supplz via a 1m^2 solar panel and an 5000mAh Battery. This is really interesting, because computer industries are much more interested in power effency than car industries…

  95. Tom Pauwels says:

I would use it for Hamradio Application .. Digital Repeater / Aprs Tracking / Svxlink etc .. i wonder how it will perform against the RaspBerry Pi

  96. Andrew says:

I currently work in a research lab designing, building, and flying research satellites. I would use my Gooseberry to automate ground station activities. Automatically controlling a 26 meter radio dish!

    Check out out blog: http://exploration.engin.umich.edu/blog/

  97. Inky says:

I want to see if it will blend

  98. Till says:

I want to create an autarc mini pc. Together with two other engineering students we’ll print our own Case with a 2.5″ drive bay and a powered USB hub. Having packed together everything nicely we’ll work on an autonom power supply system based on a big battery and some solar panels.

This is really huge because computer industries has been into energy saving with much more efforts than other industries, especially car industries…

And of course we want to beat the raspberry pi in benchmarks!

  99. Fredrik says:

I am a laid off music teacher that is substituting in one of the largest districts in California for all grades and subject areas. I teach thousands of students every month, and my plan is to demonstrate this pc to the students I come in contact with, and explain that they could own one for a reasonable price. This pc will absolutely increase the productivity of my student population, as a considerable number of them don’t have the money to own a standard pc, but still need to be able to surf the web for research, and type their class assignments. This pc is the key to their future success. I thought the raspberry pi was going to be the key, but after fiddling with it, it is just not powerful enough to get the job done, and that is where the gooseberry solves the problem.

  172. kflick89 says:

I would use it to further my linux abilities and to work on a easy to use intuitive personal cloud server for the arm processor. I would like to base this system on either Debian/Ubuntu or preferably BSD. The cloud has become increasingly popular of the last year which is great for some, but honestly do you want major corporations to store and have access to all of your personal data. So i plan to create a distrobution that provides cloud functionality but is completely under the end users control. All the benefits of a major cloud service and more, while still retaining what little bit of privacy we have left in the modern age. Basic functionallity would include an easy to setup ftp file server, vnc remote desktop, web browser and social applications. Would also include dlna media streaming software as well as a remote torrent client. Would also like to create an easy way to acess your server through an account the keeps track of your dynamic ip adress by having the gooseberry update its ip to a server if it has changed. All of this would of course be encrypted and password controlled with acess across many devices including but not limited to android, ios, windows, and linux devices. So in short I would make the ultimate home server for day to day use.

  173. Noro says:
